Chin Augmentation
The chin is an integral part to facial symmetry. In individuals who have a weak chin, it can lead to an asymmetrical or uneven profile. This leads to a poorly defined neck and even impacts the way your nose looks on profile, which looks larger than it is in individuals with weak chins. Chin augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of your chin, creating an overall more aesthetically pleasing profile and facial symmetry. As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Walker has the skill and expertise to create the beautiful results you are looking for. Walker MD is 19 minutes from Downtown Atlanta and 12 minutes from Brookhaven.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Dr. Walker’s popular Atlanta chin augmentation is a highly sought-after treatment that improves the look of your jawline and chin. Very popular in both men and women who have a recessed or narrow chin, a chin augmentation can be a life-changing treatment. Facial balance and harmony through proper proportions are important aspects of the aesthetic appearance of your face. Chin projection and shape are important aspects to the appearance of your jawline, your under-chin, and your nose. A stronger and refined chin tightens the skin under your chin for a more chiseled look. Chin augmentation is an excellent procedure with minimal downtime to improve your profile if you have a small and/or recessed chin.
Generally, chin augmentation may be performed with facial fillers (Juvéderm Voluma, Radiesse, or Restylane Lyft), fat grafting if little volume is needed, or utilizing an implant for permanent results with minimal downtime. Although there are different materials available for chin implants, Dr. Walker prefers utilizing a soft silicone implant for a more natural feel.
Who is a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation is a very popular and common procedure for both men and women. It is commonly performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty to improve the facial profile and create facial harmony, as a weak chin makes the nose look larger than it is. Dr. Walker will review your medical history and make sure that there are no illnesses or medical conditions that would preclude you from having this wonderful procedure done. Ideal candidates for chin enhancement (augmentation) exhibit the following:
- Small or receding chin.
- Normal-sized mandible (jaw).
- Normal bite/occlusion – upper and lower meet up correctly.
- Good general health.
- Non-smoker – non-smokers heal faster than smokers and have a lower risk of infection.
- Generally, physically healthy.
- Physical maturity and no longer growing.
- Realistic expectations for improvement of facial contours.
How is the Chin Augmentation Procedure with an Implant Done?
A chin implant can be performed under mild sedation or local anesthetic in the office. Oftentimes, though, it is performed under general anesthesia as part of other facial procedures such as a rhinoplasty or neck lift. A short, essentially invisible, an incision is carefully placed in the crease under your chin. Dr. Walker then places the implant into a tight pocket onto the jaw bone and secures it in place. He typically uses a silicone implant, which he can sculpt as needed to compensate for pre-existing asymmetries of the chin or jawline. Chin implants are designed to be long-lasting without the need for future change. They are available in various sizes and shapes to address your specific needs. During your consultation, Dr. Walker will discuss your goals with you and will recommend an implant that’s right for you.
Chin Augmentation Recovery
Following chin augmentation surgery, you should expect to be away from work and recovering from your procedure for about one week. Swelling, redness, and bruising may rarely take up to three weeks to completely subside, at which time you will be able to see the full extent of the change to your facial contours. Sutures under the chin are left in place for one week. Chin enhancement surgery creates an immediately visible outcome, which usually leads to instantaneous satisfaction by Dr. Walker’s clients. Strenuous activities and contact sports are to be avoided for the first month.
