Kybella® vs Neck Liposuction vs Coolsculpting® for Double Chin

Treatment Options

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable for fat reduction of the chin and neck. It works by breaking down fat cells that are present in these areas. Kybella® is administered as multiple small injections in the treatment area.
Coolsculpting® is a non-surgical treatment option that is FDA-approved for fat reduction. It works by freezing and breaking down fat cells that are present in these areas to.

Neck liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from the under-chin and neck. It can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other procedures, such as buccal fat removal, chin augmentation, neck lift, facelift, or other procedure.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Kybella® and CoolSculpting® typically require a series of treatments for best results and it is occasionally somewhat unpredictable how many sessions are needed to achieve a given outcome. The number of treatments necessary will vary depending on the individual and the amount of change desired. Neck liposuction is a surgical procedure that is typically done in the office under local anesthesia and requires one session only.

Which Treatment is Right for Me?

This is a difficult question to answer, as the best treatment for each individual will vary depending on their unique situation. Kybella® and Coolsculpting® are both great non-surgical options for reducing a double chin, and they often produce similar results. Although non-surgical procedures, both do have some swelling and often bruising (especially Kybella®) as well as discomfort after the procedure and therefore are also associated with downtime. Neck liposuction is also an excellent option and has 1-week downtime with mild bruising and swelling during that period. Neck liposuction requires 3 tiny incisions for access under the chin and behind each ear that are barely visible once healed. Ultimately, the best way to reduce a double chin is to consult with Dr. Walker to see which option is best for you and your individual goals.

What is the Downtime?

Kybella® and Coolsculpting® have little to no downtime, so you can typically resume your normal activities right away albeit both do lead to swelling as well and some bruising especially in the case of Kybella®. Neck liposuction produces the most results, always works, is the gold standard treatment, and is associated with a 1-week downtime.

What are the Expected Results?

Both Kybella® and Coolsculpting® require several treatments to see full results. Kybella® results are typically seen 2-4 weeks post-treatment, with the final result at 3 months after the last session (typically at least 2-3 sessions are needed, each 4-6 weeks apart). Coolsculpting® results are typically seen  2-4 months post-treatment, with the final result at 6 months. Neck liposuction surgery results can be seen immediately, but the final result may not be apparent until swelling and bruising have subsided and the excess skin contracted, i.e. 3-6 months after the treatment.
